On January 24, 1795, that body chartered the Tennessee Land Company with a capital of Zachariah Cox and Matthias Maher were its chief promoters and the limits of their grant, together with their plan for its disposal, are given in this publication.6 It was popularly believed that the legislators had a pecuniary interest in the company, and this may account for the prompt subscription to the greater part Of the shares issued.
