Unknown Author
4.9/5 (11031 ratings)
Description:This full-color exhibition catalogue celebrates the work of the four Italian visual poets: Giuseppe Chiari, Claudio Francia, Eugenio Miccini, and Lamberto Pignotti. In 1963, Pignotti and Miccini founded Gruppo 70 as a critical response to the advent of mass media and other cultural developments. The group based in Florence consisted of neo avant-garde poets, musicians and artists including Lucio Marcucci, Luciano Ori, Giuseppe Chiari and Sylvano Bussotti. At the same time, the literary group, Gruppo 63 was founded by Umberto Eco among others. This group of writers coined the term Poesia Visiva, or visual poetry, which has become synonymous with the verbal-visual work of the Italians in this exhibition catalogue. The forty mixed media and collage works in the catalogue capture the essence of Visual Poetry in Italy from the late sixties to present. Inspired by the Dada movement, these artists working in Florence, Italy made major contribution to the Visual Poetry and FLUXUS movements through their work. The exhibition catalogue, VISUAL POETRY: Contemporary Art from Italy, is the first of its kind in English with essays discussing the historical context of Visual Poetry, and the art movements that contributed to its development and evolution along with an essay on the work of the four Italian artists featured in the exhibition.
