Hugo's Awakening: #1 Aussie bush noir

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (31315 ratings)
Description:It is Halloween eve. Hugo has risked his life to meet his wife in outback Tangleton. Jessie said she'd come at nightfall. But Hugo suffers from 'Swiss Cheese Syndrome', his psychologist jokes. It’s no joke to Hugo though. He can recall the last 24 hours, and the events of years ago, but the in-between time is shot through with holes. Where has Jessie, been? Why has she called him back to this deserted country town on this searing hot day? Hugo waits and drinks and sweats on the front veranda of a bar. He suspects the mutilated barman may have had an affair with Jessie, but he can’t be sure. Memories trickle back, assisted by visits from the one-legged local farmer Tommy Gunn, and the legendary axeman Jack “Smacker” Jones. Hugo reads a note in his pocket with a quote by Sigmund Freud describing a mental condition called ‘Repression’. The heat intensifies and the night closes in; Hugo glimpses more and more of the man he was. But who is he now, and where is he heading? He had hopes for a happy life, and children with Jessie on a nearby farm called Jonesland. But she ran away. He recalls a cave where he found a ‘cursed bone’ which was pointed by local aboriginal people. Did the bone make him do the things he starts to remember, or was it his own nature and free will? When Jessie drives past the bar at nightfall without stopping, Hugo gives chase along a road from which he discovers there is no turning back. It leads Hugo to a stunning awakening, reunion and transformation. *** "I was very impressed with this book. It is rich with authentic detail and the characters of Hugo and Jessie are fleshed out slowly but deeply. I love the way the author took time revealing the back story and the grisly history behind them. Disturbing but oddly sympathetic characters. Edgy dark humour throughout. Fascinated by the visions and the dream-reality mix" – Mark Droic , Amazon Australia customer. ★★★★★ "Hugo!!! I want to read more about this guy. Who was he before Halloween outed his inner monster? There are tantalising glimpses of the guy he must have been, but perhaps he was always a master at hiding his inner self" - A Deans, Amazon US customer. ★★★★ "A gripping and totally chilling psychological thriller. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can't wait to read more!" - Amazon US customer. ★★★★ "A psychological thriller … it leads us to an understanding of the disturbing circumstances that led to the separation of Hugo from his wife Jessie and the life he had dreamed of when he moved to the country. As the story progresses, the reader is also awakened with glimpses into Hugo's unstable and deranged mind. We meet his psychiatrist Dr Hyde and as his supressed memories surface, witness his unexpected transformation … I enjoyed this eccentric, tongue-in-cheek tale" – L.S. Clifton, Amazon UK customer. ★★★★ "Even where you are given hints to what Hugo has been up to, you can never be sure that you have got it right. I wanted, and needed, to read on to see the next giveaway … "- Mad Mike C, Amazon UK customer. ★★★★★We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
