To begin with, it was impossible for the editor of the Pickwickian publication to have foreseen what was to occur at this meeting (even if he were aware that such a meeting was to be held), just as it was impossible for him to know what did occur when he wrote to me, for his letter ante-dated by several days this particular gathering; so I still say it seems more than an ordinary coincidence. From almost the beginning of the meeting my mind was constantly assailed by the thought that I was not living through a present-day experience at all; but what was going on about me was no more or less than a speaking likeness of some epoch of Charles Dickens's matchless imagery.
