Description:Excerpt from A Discourse: Delivered at the Eleventh Anniversary of the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West, in the First Presbyterian Church, Poughkeepsie, N. Y. October 29th, 1854 "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" Psalm xi. 3. This Psalm was written at a time of peculiar peril in the history of David. Enemies were every where abroad, and his life even in danger. His friends, alarmed for his safety, urged his escape to the mountains. For lo, they cried, the wicked bend their bow; they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. If the foundations he destroyed what can the righteous do? The Psalmist nobly replies to their fears. "In the Lord put I my trust. How say ye to my soul, flee as a bird to your mountain? The Lord is in his holy temple: the Lord's throne is in heaven; his eyes behold; his eyelids try the children of men. The Lord trieth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall reign snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
