Description:Excerpt from The Savage-Club Papers But I may as well state candidly all the considerations which weighed with us in the scale of decision. Although there was no present demand upon our efforts, we had reason to fear that appeals might soon be made to us. We deemed it better, therefore, to take the opportunity offered us of forming a Fund, from which claimants might be assisted if occasion should arise, than to risk emergencies which might find us unprepared. The last consideration had more weight with us than all the others. By publishing the Papers every year - which, with the favour of the public, it is our intention to do - we hope to render assistance to our unfortunate brethren without parading their names and calling public attention to their distresses. But we desire most expressly to state that we appeal to no one's charity. Here is the book. Let it stand upon its own merits. No more need be said, except that the Poetry, Prose, Music, and Pictures which form this volume are contributed gratuitously, and that we are again indebted to Mr. E. C.
