Copious illustrations have been given to make the work intelligible and interesting to young students; and numerous explanatory notes have been all along inserted, to guard the pupil against the errors to which experience shows he is liable. Sturm's theorem has been omitted, because it has no application in the usual course of mathematical study, and because the mental power of the student can be spent more profitably on other branches of mathematics. In the earlier chapters, some of the most interesting practical applications of the subject have been introduced.
