Description:Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 6: October 20, 1908 The spirit and atmosphere of fraternity life has nowhere been so beautifully portrayed as in those exquisite opening lines of "Thanatopsis," where the poet, describing the bond of love existing between man and nature, says: "To him who, in the love of nature, holdsCommunion with her invisible form, she speaksA various language; for his gayer hoursShe has a voice of gladness, and a smileAnd eloquence of beauty; and she glidesInto his darker musings with a mildAnd healing sympathy, that steals awayTheir sharpness ere he is aware." Thus it is with the Lares and Penates of our chapter home. Sitting enthroned therein, they, too, have a "voice of gladness, and a smile for our gayer hours," while, for our sadder moments, there is the tender sympathy "that steals away their sharpness ere we are aware." Here, then, we breathe the true fraternal spirit - engendered, as it is, by the close companionship, the communal interest, and, above all, by the sound principles and high ideals of E.
