Description:Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the Rebellion: 1861-1866 Being now in the eightieth year of my life, I am induced to comply with the repeated urgings of my family and not a few of my friends, to make a record of my public life in the service of the United States during the Rebellion, and of my personal experiences with the military and civil powers of the Government. It has been a custom with the members of my family, which for near two and a half centuries has been identified with the progress of the country, to leave to their descendants something of a record of their lives and services, and to transmit to the eldest son of the senior line these mementoes of the family. By this observance I am the inheritor of the records of the family - Huguenot emigrants from France - and of the ancient family plate, used in the motherland three hundred and fifty or more years ago.
