The Hillman Diaries

Alfred James Hillman
4.9/5 (12191 ratings)
Description:Alfred Hillman arrived in Western Australia in 1831 and became Assistant Surveyor-General. He Planned The layout of the City of Perth. He surveyed the Albany Highway, walking with his party from Albany to Perth through the virgin bushland the whole way. He did most of the early surveying in the Albany district and in the Northam/York district. His eldest son, Alfred James Hillman was a banker, being with the Western Australian Bank from its founding, second in authority to the manager. He was a meticulous diarist, methodically recording and commenting upon every event and every person in the young Colony. Birth, deaths, marriages, fires, altercations, murders, sports, theatre, shipping and shipwrecks, parliament, building the first railway, opening of new Banks, the first street lighting, founding of newspapers, introduction of ice to Perth - all are recorded along with critical appraisal on all the personages of the day from Governors down. Only six years of his diary survive, from late 1877 to early 1884. They are presented for the first time verbatim, giving a unique insight into the hardships of those years, the fortitude of the pioneers who experienced them and the character of the man himself who recorded it all.The penetrating appraisals of people he met and places he visited on extended tours to the Eastern States of Australia in 1878 and to England in 1883 stamp Hillman as a keenly observant traveler with a great gift of expression. He carries you with him as surely as if you were there.Through the triumphs, the traumas, the tragedies, the joys and pathos of a full but short life he takes you to within days of his tragic and early death, a death which you perceive as inevitable from his matter-of-fact comment as it inexorably approaches. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
