The same social worker is working separately with them both.Throughout their adventures during the few days of this story, Katie makes all the running and gets them into all their scrapes; while Josh can't help but tag along, trying to restrain Katie from her worst excesses but apparently wanting to be with her even though he fails. By degrees, however, Josh ultimately has as great an effect on Katie as Katie has had on Josh. At first, Katie is not easy to understand – or is perhaps easy to understand all too quickly. There is quite a lot of coarse language and of morally reprehensible behaviour not only from a number of characters the pair of them have to contend with but also – not surprisingly, given her upbringing – from Katie herself.
