He is, after all, an Arthurian scholar and retired professor of medieval literature, not a high-flyer in one of the fields of science and technology so beloved to corporations and governments. But when he learns of the committee’s purpose, his surprise deepens. The alien civilization which contacted Earth a couple of years earlier has made an unusual offer: technological assistance in return for the services of a peace-keeping mission, under UN auspices, to assist another world that is spiraling into savagery and chaos, a world still locked in its own Dark Ages. The aliens who will transport them to this world, however, not only forbid the use of advanced technology, but have selected an unlikely (and rather whimsical) Canadian plan from among many proposals: the mission will bring a sword in a stone to this otherworld; there it will be drawn by a heroic leader, who will restore political stability and the hope for a brighter future. Maelduin’s surprise that such an impractical plan should be adopted turns to horror, however, when he discovers that the committee wants more than his scholarly advice. They want him to play the role of Merlin. As he grumbles to Gawain O’Rorke, the good friend he makes at the training camp somewhere in the wilds of Alberta, “This was not my plan for retirement.” But then they are joined by the twins, Karen and Beth Johnston . . . . Thus begins a series of perilous (and at times humorous) adventures, for on their journey to find the right champion, Maelduin and his companions must survive assassination attempts, ambushes, pitched battles (on both sea and land), and a daring rescue of captives from the aptly named Fortress of Skulls. This, however, is not the only journey they must undertake. He and his handful of close friends are, he learns from the mysterious ‘Lady,’ avatars of powerful beings who dwell in the ‘spirit world,’ and their process of self-discovery is only beginning. There are many advantages to the innate talents they gradually unlock, including Maelduin and O’Rorke’s unexpected success as tricksters; but like everything in life these come at a price.
