Description:The present book deals with the Minahasans, who live in the extreme northeast of the island of Sulawesi, formerly Celebes, in Indonesia. The Minahasans occupy one of the most fertile places of that part of the world. Up until the beginning of the nineteenth century the Minahasans still live in tribal groups, speaking different, though related languages. With the coming of the colonial powers dramatic changes set in, and by the middle of that century the Minahasans converted en masse to Christianity. Minahasa became incorporated into the market economy of the Dutch East Indies and after initial set-backs the Minahasans achieved considerable economic progress. Many Minahasans enlisted in the Dutch East Indian army, and the use of Dutch and Malay became widespread. Soon Minahasa was dubbed the Twelfth Province of The Netherlands.
