The US wants to maintain its leadership in transatlantic relations. French interests in this context compete with those of the US, as it wants to establish a continental European leadership. Turkey is a long-time member of NATO with the second largest military in the Alliance. As a non-EU NATO member country, Turkey is concerned about the decline of NATO's role vis-�-vis the CSDP in the European context.
