Description:The fourth volume in a six part series of softcover books, Bob Pennisi presents through the use of b&w photos (color images appear only on the front and back cover) the various major component railroads that were eventually merged to form Conrail on April 1, 1976.Since its formation in September 1960 through the merger of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western and the Erie railroads, the EL established a devout and loyal following among its fans. The road's colorful gray, maroon and yellow diesels plied the rails between New Jersey and Chicago, while northern New Jersey still saw operation of ancient mutliple-unit electric commuter trains, along with diesel powered commuters too, well into the late 1970s.While much of the focus is on freight trains, EL's passenger trains, specifically the "Phoebe Snow", also receives coverage. A few steam fan trips are also included.Table of ContentsIntroduction ........................................ 4The Friendly Service Route ...................... 5Marion Division .................................. 10Mahoning & Buffalo Divisions ................ 18Susquehanna Division ........................... 28Scranton Division ................................ 46New York Division .............................. 58Album ............................................. 78Acknowledgements ..............................88The author was employed by the EL beginning in 1962, eventually leaving in 1977 when it had already became part of Conrail. His passion for the railroad comes through the expressive photos found within these covers. While this volume may not compare to later all color efforts about the EL, such as Preston Cook's superb "Erie Lackawanna Memories", it is nevertheless a good book considering it was published in 1979, when most railroad books and even the popular railfan magazines were mostly in b&w.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
