Description:BRITISH GEORGIA, Governor and Council Journals 1782 The final hours had come, despite the best efforts of Governor Wright, his Council and Loyalists. On short notice the British Navy announced that ships would arrive at Savannah to take Loyalists their families, and slaves away. Abandoning the colony was a major blow, but transportation to another home was vital. They were destitute, and must start over in strange lands. Their blood, sweat and tears had been for naught – they had little but their lives. Those who had slaves went with them to British islands in the Caribbean, where they were devastated by two successive hurricanes, and yellow fever. The small farmers, and poor folks were transported to Nova Scotia, where they received (in the middle of the winter) land and the opportunity to start over come spring. Only the very well heeled chose to return “home” where they spent years petitioning the King and Parliament for some financial restitution for their massive losses in the colony of Georgia. The pitiful sums were long in coming, and details can be found in their Loyalist’s Claims.
