Description:The Farm Security Administration (FSA) was one of the many federal programs which were part of the New Deal response to depressed conditions in American life between 1933 and 1943. Russell Lee spent about two weeks in July, 1940 in the neighboring Taos County mountain villages of Chamisal and Penasco photographing the Spanish-speaking residents and all aspects of their life, producing photographs showing the strength of traditional values which still informed the life of the community. Lee's photographs of the values and practices brought during the colonial period from Mexico were taken on the eve of the most decisive change in the community's the beginning of World War II.
