However, as the styles have been copied time and again to form the basis of new forms of design, often their origins have been forgotten and some of their beauty lost. This book is a pictorial survey of decoration since the Industrial Revolution. It is the first of its kind: the few great nineteenth-century works, such as Owen Jones' Grammar of Ornament, either concentrated entirely on historical examples or on contemporary material; no recent work has attempted such a wide-ranging survey. All styles of ornament are covered in turn — from nineteenth-century Encyclopedism to designs of Zandra Rhodes. Each of the twelve chapters has a detailed and concise introduction, discussing the origin and history of the style and the designers who developed it.
