Bartok a 18 ansBela Viktor Janos Bartok est ne dans le Banat austro-hongrois, region a la confluence des cultures (magyare, roumaine, slovaque) et foyer d'irredentisme, d'hostilite aux Habsbourg, puis au regime Horthy. Ses parents etaient assez cultives. Sa mere, Paula Bartok (nee Paula Voit), etait institutrice et son pere, denomme Bela lui aussi, etait directeur d'une ecole d'agriculture. Tous deux pratiquaient un peu la musique. Bela fut leur premier enfant, bientot suivi d'une petite s ur, Erzsebet (Elza) en 1885. Le premier instrument du tout jeune Bela fut un tambour dont il se servait pour battre la mesure lorsque sa mere lui jouait du piano. Elle commence a lui enseigner ce dernier lorsqu'il atteint ses 5 ans. Il a 7 ans quand son pere meurt.
