AMONG the companions of Dampier on his journey across the isthmus, and in his subsequent cruise, was Mr. John Cook, a Creole, born in St. Christopher's, and a man of good capacity. He had acted as quarter-master, or second in command, under Captain Yanky, a French Flibustier, who at this time held a commission as a privateer. By the ordinary laws of the Bucaniers, when a prize fit for a piratical cruise was taken, the second in command was promoted to it, and in virtue of this title Cook obtained an excellent Spanish ship.
