Imperial Japan's Sneak Attack in Subic: An Untold Episode of World War II

Angel N. Pagaduan
4.9/5 (14262 ratings)
Description:When Japan sneakily attacked Pearl Harbor on 12/07/1941, enmeshing America in the world's deadliest turmoil, the school where I was a 10-year-old-4th-grader, in my birthplace, Subic, was also bombed the same day. But it was Sunday- no school- so lives got saved to this day for me. Unlike in Hawaii, though, a 3-year Japanese conquest ensued, spearheaded by the Bataan Death March, followed by a dreaded Kempetai-Ganap surveillance--- amid plunder, insecurity, hunger, and disease. Rich and poor alike suffered. Mickey Mouse money inundated sky-high prices of scanty food and medicines, resulting in fatal illnesses for the grim reaper's harvest almost daily without burial formalities. But most unforgettable were the supernatural phenomena my family experienced. First was the startling, mystical emergence of the spiritual image of an adolescent uncle who untimely died of malaria 11 kilometers away from where we were sojourned from a preceding evacuation. Second was when I too myself got sick of typhoid, with so high a fever I deliriously saw my said dead uncle's spiritual image... his arm extended reaching for mine as I similarly did--- but to no avail. "Had your hands reached each other, death could have claimed you already by then" was what I was only told afterward. Another wonder is that, simultaneous with my ghastly jaw-jarring terror of the moment, I felt physically my back pressed lying on a finger of the corpse of my prematurely born sibling who had earlier died due to my mother's own ill health at the time. And here's the 3rd mystery: When my father got sick also of typhoid, my mother called for a "herbularyo..". quack doctor whose diagnosis method is called "tawas." Asking for a bowl of water and three pieces of small white paper, he floated each on the water. For the first, nothing happened; second, none also; and third, "Oh, unbelievable," was just how overwhelmingly bewildered we were as we saw three children's figures along with a man's on bed emerging in a photo negative-like configuration. "Your husband is being played with by the "spirits of subterranean denizens ("Nuno" in Pilipino). Make an offering of food with a lighted candle by his bed side," the "tawas" doctor advised--- which my mother did. We simply beheld not an illusion but a reality per se. My father's recovery ever since shielded him from getting sick again, except of common colds until his death at 79- not by disease but by traffic accident in 1986 in New York. And providential or not, my father's recovery was what later bridged his survival of the war against his risky double role as overt teacher and covert guerrilla, posing a Sword-of-Damocles danger to his whole family. Also, he succeeded in protecting us, his family, until the U.S.'s liberation of Subic in 1945, topped by his eventual attainment of American citizenship with his whole family. And this came about only because of General Douglas MacArthur's fulfilled promise of salvation, as if he was used by God in President Franklin Roosevelt's leadership of wealth, power, and influence in paving the way where we all are now, including how the vanquished Japan became the progressive, real-God-abiding- no longer the Kamikaze-crazed, emperor-worshipping- democracy that it is today. On my part, I see it providential that had I not immigrated to the U.S. in 1986 at my father's insistence against my interest in the times' Subic politics, I would have been history already in 2007--- at age 76--- due to sudden heart attack. Hi-tech healthcare had saved me via a successful triple bypass, but deep in my consciousness is God's omnipotence as the # 1 factor behind it all, inclusive of DNA. "God has still a purpose for you... not yet your time to go" was what relatives and friends could only say. Whatever is the truth, it is all learnable from my book's interrelated realities, especially as regards its inescapable applications to present-day ongoing ills of societal and world afWe have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
