Give Us This Mars (Mars #2)

Thomas William Cronin
4.9/5 (29363 ratings)
Description:The first book of the series, "As It Is On Mars", related the story of how a small settlement in a Martian Shangri-La called Leaf Valley came to be founded by the few survivors of the disastrous manned Mars missions of 2038, when everyone on Earth thought they had died of starvation. The novel "Give Us This Mars" has the question of the ownership of the land of Mars as its theme. It relates what unfolds when the U.S. and E.U. find out about the Martian settlement in 2044, and discover it to be of such enormous value, trillions of dollars, that they both draw up rival plans for rescuing the settlers and getting control of it. Although they both want to set up a lucrative Mars colony, nowhere is this prize more lusted after than in Europe, with its long colonial tradition. The only problem is that the settlers do not want rescued. They like living in their Martian paradise, have a different vision for their part of Mars, and lay claim to their lands. A NASA rescue mission gets to Mars first, in 2046; but Congress has under funded it, and it has a nuclear accident in Mars orbit that prevents it from landing; the crippled mission gets safely back to Earth only with help the settlement provides. This gives the E.U its chance. But as ESA prepares for a mission in 2048, the U.S. President, determined not to let the E.U. snatch the Martian prize, authorizes the U.S. Air Force to send a secret armed mission that will get to Mars just before ESA. Then the Air Force mission is delayed by a few months, and, to the exasperation of the President and the Joint Chiefs, the armed ESA mission lands on Mars in July 2048, a month ahead of the AU.S. military mission. The tale on Mars opens in Chapter Two, with the arrival of this ESA mission, headed by a ruthless aristocrat and strategy mastermind, determined to get the settlers off the planet with the least embarrassment to the E.U., so that he can become Governor of Europe's first Mars colony, based in Leaf Valley. The story relates the unforgettable twists and turns of the great struggle that the settlers put up, as they fight for the rights to their homes and lands. Outnumbered and unarmed, the struggle seems hopeless. They have only their ingenuity, determination and their knowledge of Mars, and put up an unbelievable fight, even as it becomes obvious that they are no match for the strategic brilliance of the ESA mission's leader either, and desperately need help. But where can they get it? Even the approaching U.S. mission is after their lands too. The story is almost a Martian rerun of a dramatic sequence of events that unfolded in the very early days of the New World, in the time of the conquistadors. It is only almost the same, however, for history never repeats itself exactly. The ongoing saga unfolds in the spectacular terrain of Kasei Valley, and the Red Planet itself continues to play a central role. It has a never-ending repertoire of surprises in store for those who would set foot on its soil without paying their due respects. The scenes are set in many parts of the huge Kasei Valley complex, some of them familiar places from the earlier novel, like Leaf Valley, but some of them forbidding and treacherous, like the great labyrinth of western Kasei Valley, whose interlocking valleys are more filled with sand dunes than anywhere else on Mars.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
