Of course the heroine has a love-hate relationship with her powerful socialite mother, misses horribly the father she was close to, and has just returned to her home town, tail between her legs, after a messy divorce. But Mary Alice Tate is sharp and full of energy and knows how to get inside people's heads. Unfortunately, the work she does on her own to solve these crimes often puts her in a great deal of danger. She is always protected somewhat by Boon, her lab who accompanies her everywhere. I'm not a reader of "cozies" or light and humorous who-dun-its, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
