Description:The ballads and songs in this publication were collected in the Southern Appalachians between 1916 and 1918. They are printed unharmonized, together with variants and other songs, in English Folk-Songs from the Southern Appalachians, collected by Cecil J. Sharp, edited by Maud Karpeles (Oxford University Press, London, [1932] 1952. The Rich Old Lady, The Tree in the Wood, Lord Thomas and Fair Ellinor, The Lovers’ Tasks (The Elfin Knight), John Randolph (Lord Randal), Fair Margaret and Sweet William, Barbara Ellen, The House Carpenter (The Daemon Lover), The Twelve Apostles (The Ten Commandments). English folk music collector and editor Cecil J. Sharp (1859 - 1924 was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics and took the first part of the MusB examination. Sharp’s visit to America just after the outbreak of World War I had far-reaching consequences, leading him to collect songs of English origin and local ‘square dances’ in Appalachia. This in turn gave impetus to American efforts to collect and publish traditional ballads and songs, both English and indigenous, and to conserve their other traditional arts. Maud Karpeles (1885 - 1976) accompanied him as amanuensis and assistant on his three later wartime visits to the States and after his death she edited and published two volumes of his English Folk-Songs from the Southern Appalachians; Sharp himself published several books of these and other Appalachian songs between 1917 and 1923. His was a unique contribution to the movement to preserve and disseminate the heritage of English folk-songs and he collected 4,977 tunes, of which he published more than 1,118 and provided accompaniments for 501. This was not only an outstandingly valuable achievement in itself; he also gave an impetus to the renaissance of English art music through the use that composers such as Vaughan Williams, Holst, and Butterworth made of material that he had collected and made known to them.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
