The Wishbone

Margaret Galvin
4.9/5 (10907 ratings)
Description:The Wishbone is a collection of lyrical poems by Tipperary born, Wexford based poet, Margaret Galvin. This, her fourth collection, was compiled largely while the poet was participating on a coarse in Storytelling practice organised by Wexford Library Service in co-operation with W.O.R.D. (Wexford Organisation for Rural Development) and delivered at Carlow Campus, Wexford by Professor Hamish Fyfe and Professor Mike Wilson from University of Glamorgan.Published by Wexford County Council through the Library Server, The Wishbone reflects the poet's concern with story and explores the ways in which storytelling and poetry are closely interlinked. The poems address a wide range of topics, recount diverse happenings and examine the myriad concerns of unlikely characters like The Blue Donnell who won a bespoke suit in the fashion competition in The Sunday Press, or The Black Mahoneys who functioned as a kind of alternative clergy. Margaret Galvin engages in a unique way with the Ireland of the early 60's characterised by grey Anglias, Green Shield stamps, hire purchase salesmen and recruiting missionary religious orders. She writes with a directness that eschews sentiment or artifice. Though essentially Irish, her poetry has a universal appeal reflected in the wide range of literary magazines in which many of these poems have been published, notably: New Irish Writing (The Sunday Tribune), Irish Studies Review (Bath), Poetry Cornwall, Mobius (New York), The Red Wheelbarrow (University of St Andrew's, Scotland), Quattrocento (Wales).Critics regard her work as sharp, clear and unflinching. She is seen as a poet who pays admirable attention to the sacredness, the vital life, of the moment. The casualness with which she writes about misfortune and adversity has been further noted. Her poetry has attracted a number of significant prizes, notably The Brendan Kennelly and The Smurfit Samhain Awards. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
