Description:One morning Luce awakens to find the Sun is gone and the earth has been plunged into eternal darkness. Terrified, everyone flees to the City of Light. Only Luce remains behind; he has saved a small light for such a moment and with it he is able to banish the darkness. But when it soon becomes apparent that night lingers and the Sun is truly gone, Luce decides to leave his home in the Valley of Man to search for answers to this sudden, eternal night.He makes his way through a fearsome and difficult forest, where he stumbles upon a Garden. There the Keepers tell him that the Sun was banished in a skirmish with the City, and now the City’s light is growing more harsh, unnatural and more powerful as each day that passes. When Luce asks what can be done, they suggest that he build a mountain (as that is his profession) and set his light atop to guide the Sun back home. Since Luce and the Sun were once very good friends, he accepts this mission. However, the Keepers warn him that where he has to build his mountain – the eastern-most side of the City of Light – is fraught with danger. He will be closer to the City than ever and its artificial light will be within his grasp. The temptation of the City’s light might be too great, then he will despair of darkness, abandon his mountain and the Sun and go to the City. Luce assures them this won’t happen because his love of the Sun is great and the lamp he carries has light enough to sustain him in the darkness. But eventually, the darkness overwhelms him and he leaves his mountain, going to the City of Light.There he comes upon the City’s people who spend their days writhing and thrashing amid the burning glare, crying for more light and begging for more noise. He meets a strange assortment of characters who provide a picture of what the City really is and the corruption that lies within. A crisis occurs when Luce finally understands the meaning of the City of Light and how it threatens to destroy him, the Sun and the Garden which he has come to love.The City of Light is at once a fantasy about a world gone awry and an allegory about the end of a civilization.
