Description:This volume is a study of homicide rates among Latinos living in US cities; this is a phenomenon about which much has been said (most of it by anti-immigration advocates) but very little written. Martinez bases his study on data he collected in five major cities with large and diverse Latino populations (Chicago, El Paso, Houston, Miami, and San Diego). He began working on this topic after noticing that homicide rates among urban Latinos are lower than would be expected given the relative economic deprivation of most of the communities in which they live. He hypothesized that this was due to the strength of the social fabric within such communities, particularly those with large numbers of immigrants.
