The area is about 14,000 square miles, and the population 84,113, according to the census taken in March 1901. It is on the Eastern side of the Peninsula with a coast line of about 135 miles. The whole coast is an uninhabited forest, but has a sandy sea-shore unlike that of the West, which is muddy, and fringed with mangrove. There are two chains of islets runing parallel to the coast at a distance of about 25 miles. By the Malays, Pahang is placed first among tne 'mineral' States, next Kelantan, and then Patani. The chief gold workings are found along the central line from Mount Ophir to Patani. History. "The history of Pahang is obscure, and was chiefly concerned in olden days with invasions and threats from Siam, and, it is said, Malacca. To a great extent Pahang escaped the troubles which Johore suffered, directly and indirectly, through its European neighbours--the Portuguese and the Dutch. The first Ruler of Pahang, of whom there is any record, was a son of the Sultan Mahmud, who fled to Pahang from Malacca after the capture of that town by the Portuguese in 1511. A reputed descendant of his was Bendahara AH, who died in the year 1850 or thereabouts. He had ten children, only two of whom are of any historical importance. The names of these two Rajas were Che' Wan Muhammad Tahir and Che' Wan Ahmad. The former, who was the elder of the twain, ascended the throne on his father's death and forced his brother to flee from the country.
