All writing is divided into these four classes, according to the purpose of the writer. If his purpose is to explain a term or a set of facts, the result is called Exposition; if his purpose is to convince or to persuade another person of the truth of a particular set of facts, it is called Argument; if his purpose is to represent objects which appeal to the senses, it is called Description; if his purpose is to recount events in sequence of time, it is called Narration. The editors have compiled these specimens of prose composition because they have not found an entirely satisfactory volume of a similar nature. They have tested this book by actual use in their own classroom practice. This one volume illustrates all the kinds of writing, and its classification is more explicit and suggestive than can be found elsewhere.
