As the debate escalates, Tom investigates Gatsby's case and reveals that he made money selling illegal alcohol. Gatsby tries to deny it, but Daisy loses her resolve to break up with her husband and her claims of Gatsby appear hopeless. Gatsby and Daisy get into Gatsby's car together, with Daisy driving. On the street, she beats Tom's lover, Myrtle Wilson, to death, but her identity is unknown to Daisy, who only knew Tom was having an affair. A frightened Daisy drives off, but the car is seen by a witness. The next afternoon, Myrtle's widow, George Wilson, arrives at East Egg, where Tom tells him that it was Gatsby who killed his wife.
