An Analytical Vocabulary of the New Testament (Classic Reprint)

Description:Excerpt from An Analytical Vocabulary of the New Testament A new years ago an effort was made to aid newly-arrived missionaries in their early studies. By the publication of a small Vocabulary containing all the characters found in the Gospel of St. John. It was arranged under the Radicals and contained such expressions as would be useful in mission work. Since then many have expressed a desire for something similar on a larger scale - for a portable volume containing nough information to enable anyone to read the New Testament. The present work (the first New Testament Vocabulary published in the Mandarin Dialect) has been prepared to meet this desire, and to seek by the analysis of characters to render intelligible what seems a maze of mystery to a new-comer. Perhaps a few words of explanation of the Analytical. Method may not be out of place here. Without attempting to discuss the principle according to which at first Chinese characters were written, or how they assumed their present form, one fact is very evident; viz., that a large number of them may be roughly divided into two parts; and that these parts constantly recur in different characters. And a further fact is also apparent; viz., that what is in many cases the smaller part the Radical - has been added with a View to give a general clue to one or more of the principal meanings of the character in question. The main part of the character - the Primitive or Phonetic - thus bears a slight analogy to the root of a word in English, while the Radical has a distant resemblance to a prefix or a suffix. Hence, if the Primitive is known the task of learning the character of which it forms a part is greatly simplified This is evident for a two-fold reason. In the first place, all that is added to the Primitive is in most cases a different Radical, with which the learner is supposed to be familiar. And, in the second place, as the Radical often gives a general idea of the primary meaning, scope is given for the operation of the Law of Association - a law which works most powerfully in the study of hieroglyphics.
