Benjamin, a rising politician from Louisiana, and her husband;s apparent death, Benjamin, now a U.S Senator, helps her and she regains some of her former power as a Washington hostess and political operative and, after her friend James Buchanan becomes President, becomes the Queen of Washington; the most powerful woman in the land. After Lincoln is elected and the South tries to go its own way she organizes a spy ring and give the South the intelligence it needs to win at the first Battle of Mannassas (Bull's Run) and seduces Union officials to give her more information for the Confederate cause. She is arrested by the head of the Union Army Security Bureau, Allan Pinkerton and place under house arrest and then later imprisoned in the Old Capitol Prison. Her eight year old daughter is imprisoned with her. After much maltreatment she is released and sent South. There she finds Judah P. Benjamin is the head of the Confederate Secret Service and has more work for her. This is the second in Francis Hamit's series of novels about the Confederate Secret Service and the women who were it's most effective agents.
