With out the royal grants the chancellor could not have gain ed his wide authority over cases which ordinarily be longed to the royal or local justices; without the aid of the king he could not have effectively enforced his judg merits; and without his timely interference even the chancellor's ecclesiastical jurisdiction might have been greatly circumscribed and retarded in its development. If the latter could have had their way in this matter the universities would have re mained mere unorganized gatherings of students with out coercive powers over even their own members.
