In latere jaren soms aangevuld met noise en futurepop. Aanhangers van deze subcultuur worden Goths (Goten) genoemd. De taalkundig foutieve benaming Gothics (Gotischen) komt ook vaak voor. Er bestaan veel meningsverschillen over het gebruik van de woorden Gothic en Goth. In Nederland wordt met name Gothic veelvuldig foutief gebruikt. Ook Engelstaligen zijn het niet eens, hoewel in hun taal het woord Goth (Goot) een zelfstandig naamwoord is en Gothic (Gotisch) het bijvoeglijk naamwoord behorende bij dat zelfstandig naamwoord. De associatie van 'gothic' met horror, duisternis en het bovennatuurlijke is terug te voeren op het ontstaan van de gothic novel in de 18e eeuw.
