Reading Approaches in Malay Literature: Critical Theory in the Making

Zawiah Yahya
4.9/5 (22047 ratings)
Description:The failure of the Anglo-Amcrican critical theories to take on board the specificities of indigenous literary culture and tradition has driven indigenous scholars all over the world to construct their own theories of literary criticism. In Malaysia, many Malay literary scholars are uncomfortable with the post-modernist theories they have inherited from the west that deconstruct, relativisc and generally create shifting grounds for meaning-making. The post-modernist tendency to constantly question and problematise everything thought to be true and stable does not sit well with a community still holding fast to the certainties of its faith and tradition. In constructing their theoretical paradigms and distinctive identity, Malay scholars draw their substance from the tenets of Islam and the richness of their own literary tradition, which is the most logical way to effect a departure from the Judca-Christian and Eurocentric literary tradition of the west. Yet these indigenous theorists have little or no established critical tradition of their own to fall back on to help them. This book explores the problematics of constructing local critical theories by examining the Islamic-centric theories of Mohd. Affandi Hassan (Persuratan Barn) and Shafie Abu Bakar (Takmilah) and the Malay-centric theories of Muhammad Hj. Salleh (Puitika Melayit) and Hashitn Awang {Pengkaedahan Melayit) as well as the western-inspired theory ofMana Sikana {Teksdeaiisma).ZAWIYAH YAHYA was Professor of Critical Theory and Postcolonial Studies in the School of Language Studies and Linguistics, Universiti Kcbangsaan Malaysia be lore her retirement in 2004 and was later appointed Guest Scholar 2008-2009. Her other books published by Penerbit UKM arc Resisting Colonialisr Discourse (2,ld ed 2003) and Malay Characters in Malaysian Novels in English {2nd print 2003).We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
