He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Eric Pape School in Boston, the Art Students' League in New York and under Jean Paul Laurens and others in Paris. His first plates were etched in Paris 1906. (See list, page 20.) Hornby was in Europe when the war broke out and saw the British and French mobilizations. In 1916 he was at the front with the French troops. In 1918 he was with the Americans. Although gassed he did not spend a day in the hospital. After the Armistice was signed he had a slight attack of influenza but was able to sail for home in good health about Nov. 28, 1918.)
