The Zen of Dale: Tales of a Free-Range Historian

Dale M Gray
4.9/5 (19472 ratings)
Description:What does a Baptist know of Zen? I suspect very little.Yet, in the course of seeking to "move my life forward", I have strayed into what might be termed Zen. As I dimly understand it, Zen seeks a higher reality while embracing direct experience. This book is an accounting of my crazy adventures from 2013 to 2015 working as a historian/ archaeologist/pilot car driver. By jotting down what happened, the stories emerged. The harder I worked on accuracy, the better the stories. When I went back to edit them, I discovered that my journeys in the American west were also ventures into philosophical understanding. This may be considered as factual account of my life events with an overlay of my own thoughts, feelings, and philosophizing. It should not in any way be considered part of Orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. This book is not a “way”; indeed, I pity anyone that would try to follow in my boot prints. I walk about a thousand miles a year off-trail, such a path is fraught with peril.Instead, this book is the matrix of my direct experience with glimpses of higher reality as revealed in adventures. In it you will find tales of archaeology, history, family, and pets. The stuff of my life. There is so much auto repair work in it, I was tempted to call it “Zen and the Art of Toyota Maintenance.” Indeed, that is the name of one of the chapters. However, out of respect for Robert M. Pirsig’s excellent book, “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” I decided to take a step back from using that as a title. This is not a children’s book, but there might be a dragon here and there. Real life does have its dragons and we all do battle. The telling of some of these battles, both won and lost, has been included. Lessons learned, tears shed, but mostly a good laugh at my expense. In college, I was once approached by a psychology major doing a survey. She asked what I feared most in life. After some thought, I replied, “I am afraid that nothing will ever happen to me.” Since that time, I have wondered how anyone so young could be so stupid. In looking back at the adventures of my life since that survey question, I discovered that I had nothing to fear, nothing at all.I do not know why, but adventures seek me out whether hiking in the wilderness or sitting on my own couch watching a movie. Not only adventures enough to share, but a path that could almost be described as Zen.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
