A Parigi, inoltre, dopo un aumento delle tasse da parte di Mazarino scoppia la Fronda, che porta scompiglio nella città e preoccupa il cardinale. D'Artagnan ha ormai quarant'anni, è tenente nei moschettieri del re, non vede i suoi amici da molto tempo e si mette sulle loro tracce. Per primo, ritrova Aramis, o meglio cavaliere d'Herblay, fattosi abate, che non nasconde di appoggiare la Fronda.
