The education legacy of James Bryant Conant.

Donna D. McInerney
4.9/5 (15121 ratings)
Description:Throughout his lifetime, James Bryant Conant (1893--1978) experienced success in several different fields including scientific research and policy, international diplomacy, and educational administration and policy. While his political and scientific legacies have been treated comprehensively, his education legacy has undergone wide-ranging and contradictory shifts over the course of his career---from the time of his Harvard presidency and his Carnegie studies of the American high school to the time of his death and posthumously. Despite the existence of a prolific body of work spanning several decades from the 1930's through the early 1970's, analyses of Conant's education legacy are often based on a narrow interpretation or a misinterpretation of his works. Overall, a number of problems have characterized the means by which Conant's education legacy has been interpreted. The tendency to rely on a singular work or a limited body of works, dependence on archival resources to the neglect of published writings, profound philosophical disagreements, and the reduction of his work to formulaic interpretations have resulted in a one-dimensional perspective of the Conant legacy. Moreover, the oversimplification of Conant's work is often utilized as a means of validating the platforms and special agendas of a wide range of critics.;Based on the collective body of Conant's published works, this study aims to trace the evolution of Conant's educational thought, his socio-political theory, and the underlying educational philosophy within the relevant socio-political context. In addition to being historical, the method of this study is also analytical with the historically-based curriculum paradigm serving as the theoretical framework. As first explicated by John Dewey, this paradigm considers the nature of the learner, the values and aims of the democratic society and organized bodies of knowledge to be fundamental, integrated factors within the educative process.;Through a systematic application of the curriculum paradigm and a comprehensive treatment of Conant's published writings, his education legacy as an experimentalist, problem-solver is revealed. The value in Conant's legacy resides not in his lists of recommendations, as is commonly perceived, but in his vision of education as a social process, his candor in identifying problems, his systematic application of the method of intelligence, his abiding interest in the unity and diversity of public education, and his persistent attention to the integrated treatment of the nature of the learner, the aims of a democratic society, and the organization of subject matter within the curriculum. The reduction of Conant's legacy to formulas, footnotes, and recommendations not only distorts the historical record but it overlooks this legacy's rich potential for relevance and application in addressing contemporary educational problems. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
