Though not the oldest church in the city by any means, it seems from its foundation to have taken, as of right, the first place among the numerous churches of Norwich. Whether it was that its proximity to the castle, on whose "magna crofta" it is said to have been built, gave it a sort of courtly importance among the early Norman inhabitants of the city, for whose religious accommodation the small sacellum of the castle and the two or three other existing places of worship were of course wholly inadequate; or whether it was practically refounded in the first flush of the prosperous new trade brought to the city in the middle of the fourteenth century by the Flemings, I will not venture to say.
